Guided day tour to Winchcombe: Sudeley Castle

Sudeley Castle

Sudeley Castle

  • Many royal connections:
    • Catherine Parr, sixth wife of Henry VIII, lived here after her marriage to Thomas Seymour, Lord of Sudeley, following the king’s death. She is buried in the 14th- century chapel, entombed in white marble; her prayerbook is on display
    • Henry VIII and two more of his wives, Lady Jane Grey and Anne Boleyn, as well as Queen Elizabeth I all visited Sudeley.
    • Royalist base in the English Civil War: Charles I sought refuge here
  • Stunning landscaped gardens, designed almost as a continuation of the Castle to reflect Sudeley’s rich history, incorporate ten smaller gardens, each one distinct in its own right
  • Intricate detail is seen in the Knot Garden; topiary features throughout and the famous Queens Garden is full of old fashioned roses, with yew hedge
  • Pheasant and wildfowl sanctuary, home to 15 rare and endangered species
  • The Dent-Brocklehurst family who live in part of the castle have been connected with it since 1830. The Dents made leather gloves whilst the Brocklehursts were silk merchants – a marriage within the families brought the businesses together and thus greater prosperity
  • The town of Winchcombe has an attractive blend of stone and half-timbered building
