Warwick

Warwick Castle Warwick Castle

  • The majestic walls and turrets of the medieval fortress of Warwick Castle - built in the 14th century on the site of a Norman castle - rise above the tree-fringed River Avon
  • Owned by the Tussaud's Group, the castle is a major visitor attraction, offering 'Britain' greatest Medieval experience' during the tour of its battlements, dungeons and state rooms
  • The medieval walled town barely survived the disastrous fire of 1694: but out of the ashes arose fine Georgian buildings, to blend with the timber-framed houses that had escaped the flames
  • One to survive was the Lord Leycester Hospital, founded in 1571 to house those wounded in the service of Queen Elizabeth I and her successors, and still in use today
  • The collegiate church of St Mary contains the Beauchamp Chapel built to house the tomb of Richard Beauchamp (died 1439), one of the finest of the medieval period
