Bourton-on-the-Water
The River Windrush and Paynes Bridge
- One of the prettiest larger villages - but also one of the most commercialized, and a honeypot for visitors
- River Windrush runs right through the village, next to the Green, and there are several small footbridges over it.
- Model Village is an excellent miniature of Bourton using authentic building materials, depicting Bourton-on-the-Water as it was in 193os at 1/9th scale, and opened by King George VI in 1937
- Close to the Fosse Way - a Roman road which originally stretched from Exeter in the south-west to Lincoln to the northeast, a distance of around 250 miles. It takes its name from fossa, Latin for ditch: for 182 miles south from Lincoln it is never more than six miles off a straight line
- When busy, this is a place to pass through, and head just up the road to The Slaughters, which are even prettier but much quieter
