Surviving Roman Hypocaust
- One of the largest and most important Roman rural houses in the country, with artefacts dating back to 120 AD
- The villa was discovered by accident in 1864, when a gamekeeper found fragments of paving and pottery whilst searching for his ferret!
- Over thirty rooms were uncovered after excavation: see surviving mosaics, hypocausts (heating system), bath-houses, and latrines, dating back 1,700 years
- Site thought to have been chosen because there was a supply of fast-running spring water
- A short film gives a a helpful introduction to the site, then you may wander at your own pace around the carefully tended archaeological site
- One of the Top 10 National Trust sites
